Big Boys’ Room Update – Display and Storage Solutions

October 3, 2023

Our two older boys (8 and 10) share a room. They needed a better display and storage solution for all their treasures! I’m so happy with how it came together..and mostly all affordable Amazon finds! Sharing all the details today! If you have kiddos that collect anything, or just want to line up ALL their things, haha- this post is for you!

Check out the room coming together in this Reel I shared on Instagram: Big Boys’ Room Update
I love how my boys’ personalities really shine in this room..and it can grow and evolve with them. I want my kids to have cute rooms but I always want it to be about them and not some design trend that is popular. Our house is very much lived in….and it’s going to look that way! All the licensed things… the colorful toys…the nick naks they love and I’m here for it. Because before I know it, my home and our family, will be on to the next chapter and look totally different. Embrace it mamas and don’t feel a pressure to hide away your kids things because it’s not the “aesthetic” look people are posting.

There were a few goals for this space that I wanted to make sure I checked off.
1. Give my boys a set up to store all of their treasures – plenty of display space!

2. Give my boys a room that is manageable for them to clean – less toys and a place for everything.

3. Give my boys a room where THEIR personalities and current interests can shine.

I feel like I checked off all the boxes! We already had their beds (from IKEA) and their bedspread (from Target.) Their big pillows are from Walmart. I grabbed one for each of them because they always are wanting to sit up in their beds. Super comfy!
The paint color is Calming Gray by Sherwin Williams. I love this color SO MUCH… it’s also what I used in the playroom and the little boys’ shared room!
SHOP: Cubbies, toy bins, bedding.

The main issue in this room was the desk and lack of storage set up. I wanted to keep it unified as much as possible so that it visually was calming. Having things match really helped with that. I got two desks from Amazon that fit perfectly. They each have their own areas that they can use how they want…but it looks cohesive together. Their desk chairs are actually ones I had gotten years ago for our back patio table. They are indoor and outdoor chairs I found on Amazon. The ceiling fan is another amazon find.

I knew I needed to make the room easier for them to clean. I got two cubbies from Target…to slide under their desks. If the toys didn’t fit in there…I put them in a bin in the playroom toy closet. This has been a game changer for the boys. So much more manageable for them to clean up. Less stuff and everything HAS A PLACE.

I knew I wanted to use the space above the desks to give them more display space. The one shelf of the desk just was NOT enough for all their treasures! I found these wall shelves (they are 3 packs) on Amazon and Ben helped me get them up on the walls. The boys LOVEEEEE THEMMM. They are both into Funko POPS right now…but regardless of what they are into..they will have a space to display their favorite things! (I was a collector as a kid too…beanie babies anyone?? haha.) Asher collects Rubik cubes too and it’s pretty adorable.

I already had a basket that I put in their to help store more of their favorite stuffed animals. They have a million stuffed animals that we try to cycle through…otherwise their beds would be covered haha. (I might enable this habit a BIT…I love buying them as much as they love snuggling with them!)

Their dressers we already had as well..and they honestly have gotten some wear and tear on them BUT they were affordable options from Target and are still getting the job done. I want to always share honest home updates with you guys. I’m not going to go out and buy a dresser just for a room reveal…the ones we have are working! They each have one side…and I keep their out of season clothes in bins in their closet. The mirror is from Walmart. With all of the items on their desks…I wanted to keep their dresser clean and clear. Plus I wanted a place to be able to put their folded laundry… and then they can put it away.

I grabbed some poster frames from Walmart…and two posters at Five Below. These are their current favorite things but they can always change up the posters! I love how this room can grow with them…and really has the good bones to help them keep it organized. They can finally see all their favorite things and enjoy them!

Thanks for checking out their space…
