Fried Cheese Recipe

February 23, 2022

You need this recipe in your life. You can whip these up for the perfect salty cheesy side, appetizer OR make it the main dish and have it with a yummy salad!
We’ve been making this recipe for years. It’s one of those recipes that gets everyone cheering when they see the fresh mozzarella in the fridge!
You’ll never want to have the boxed freezer mozzarella sticks again… trust me- instant family favorite!
First things first..this is the cheese you want to get! Whatever brand you want..but the pre sliced fresh mozzarella that is in a loaf shape.
You can always get the ones not sliced…but it cuts out a step and I feel like they fry up easier, holding their shape.

When it comes to the spices below…I typically shake them in without measuring. We’ve made it so many times that you just know how much it should look like in the bowl. Customize it to your taste too! We love a good amount of oregano so I probably put even more than I listed below..but I wanted to give you a good starting point. It’s DELICIOUS.

INGREDIENTS
Fresh Sliced Mozzarella Cheese. (shown above!)
2 eggs beaten
2 tablespoons water
3/4 cup Italian style bread crumbs.
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/3 cup flour
1 pinch salt
1 pinch black pepper
olive oil, for deep frying

DIRECTIONS

1. Get out your ingredients, 3 small bowls and two large plates.
2. In a small bowl, combine eggs and water.
3. In a separate bowl, combine bread crumbs, garlic, salt, oregano and basil.
4.  In a third bowl, pour in your flour.
5. Now that your assembly line is set up...time to start! I typically use one hand for the "wet" and one for the "dry." Dip a mozzarella slice in the egg bowl, then in the flour bowl, back in the egg bowl and finally the bread crumb bowl. (egg-flour-egg-bread crumb.)
6. Repeat this 4-step process. Your fingers are going to be a total mess; just hang in there, it’s sooooo worth it!
7. Wash hands and cover plates of fully prepped cheese with foil. I put them in the freezer now for a few minutes..it helps them hold their shape and coating when you fry them.
8. After a few minutes (or whenever I finish prepping other stuff or taking care of a. kid ;) I pull them out of the freezer and let sit for a minute while my oil gets hot in my large heavy saucepan. heat oil to 375 degrees F...but I typically toss in some flour to see if it sizzles and if it does...it's go time. Carefully place breaded mozzarella sticks in the hot oil; don’t overcrowd. I usually do 6 at a time and it works out.
9. Fry until golden brown...flip and fry the other side.
10.Remove from oil with a slotted spoon, or tongs, and drain on paper towels.
11. Serve with Marinara or your favorite sauce. ENJOY!
